Mesa Life Science

General Pathway

Poster Design

For a capstone project at Mesa Community College, I designed a pathway map of courses for the Mesa Life Science department. I worked with 2 other students on this project, but I was the lead designer for the pathway. We worked with a faculty member of the Life Science Department, Katy, and the advisor, Sylvia. They both wanted a refresh on their pathway of courses, as what they had on hand was done by non-designers and not very intuitive. They have a digital pathway, and Sylvia has handouts, but for this project, it was a large poster hung up in the hallway right next to Sylvia’s office. There are dozens of paths the students can choose from, but we needed something that fit most of the people looking at the poster. Katy said she wanted something that resembled a board game, with courses along a winding path. I took that idea and made it simple and “sciencey”. Katy told us green and blue work well with science departments, so there is a green-blue gradient in the title and pathway. The courses are color-coded so students can easily understand what courses are where with credits and their totals.
